Squirrel hunt bags big game

OCTOBER 15, 1840. A letter writer in the Cobourg Star, Canada West, provides an account of a bountiful squirrel hunt by the villagers of nearby Colborne.

On the evening of Monday, the 28th ult., a few of the sportsmen of this village and its vicinity, met and drew up some hasty resolutions, and organized two companies of 20 men each, and two captains, and Friday last was agreed upon for a Squirrel Hunt.

The result was that on the evening of that day, 37 only of the hunters made their appearance, when upon counting their gameƒGarry there was found to be Two Thousand three hundred and fifty six squirrels, or their equivalent in other game, among which was a deer, foxes, ducks, partridge, pigeons and other fine game. After which the whole party partook of a supper provided by Mr. A. Yerginton, and served up in his usual good style.
